Those arms show three hands, and symbolise the historical court of justice, which had three members, the Dreigeschworenenrat (three-sworn-council). The court existed from 1566-1832 and had its seat in Jork. | |||
The oldest seals of the area date from the 16<sup>th</sup> century and showed a key, derived from the arms of [[Bremen]] as the area was ruled by the archbishops of Bremen.
