The village of Mutěnín (then Muttersdorf) was granted city rights with seal and arms in 1577. | |||
The upper half shows a copper miner, as the town developed around the local copper mine since the 13th century. The lower half shows a fox, taken from the arms of the local lord in the 16th century, Johann von Widersperg. He granted the first rights to the town in 1524. The original arms of the Wiedersperger von Wiedersperg family indeed showed a fox. | |||
Another explanation for the fox was given by Widimsky and states that it is actually the wolf of the [[Diocese of Passau]], as the area belonged to the bishops in medieval times. This is very unlikely however. | |||
