The arms were granted on November 19, 1934.

The first and fourth quarter of the arms show the arms of the Clichthove family, Lords of Gullegem in the 18<sup>th</sup> century. The second and third quarter show the arms of the Hocquingen family, an important local family. The escutcheon shows the canting arms of the Cerf family (in French, cerf=deer), an important local family in the 16th century.
