2000 Years ago, the Magdalensberg (mountain of St. Mary Magdalene) was the capital of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum, which was absorbed (rather peacefully) into the Roman Empire in 15 B.C. and eventually became the province of Noricum. For decades, archaeological campaigns have gone on at the Magdalensberg and countless objects of historical interest have been unearthed. One of these was the statue of a griffin, which is shown on the municipal arms.
