Mariastein is a famous place of pilgimage for St. Mary, hence the image of Mary and Jesus on a throne. The two firesteels (Feuereisen or Schurfeisen) are canting symbols from the arms of the Schurff family. These lived in the local castle in the 16th century and heavily promoted the village as a pilgimage site, which started the development of the village.
