History: Activated 17 December 1917 as 8th Division. Organized 5 January 1918 at Camp Fremont (California). Inactivated 5 September 1919 at Camp Lee (Virginia). Reorganized 24 March 1923. Reactivated 1 July 1940 at Camp Jackson (South Carolina). Re-designated and reorganized 9 april 1942 as 8th Motorized Division. Reorganized and re-designated 15 May 1943 as 8th Infantry Division. The insignia was redesignated for the 8th Infantry Division retroactive to 15 May 1943 and amended to revise the dimensions of the design and to provide a border space for overedge stitching on 27 February 1970.
