Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Lithuania - Lietuvas Heraldika |
PLUNGĖ
County : Telšiai
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on June 6, 1997.
Plungė received city rights in 1792 and at the same time a city emblem was designed and granted. The emblem showed a garb and the Eye of Providence. The garb indicated (agricultural) wealth, the eye was the symbol of the Four Year Perliament, and was a widely used symbol of the government at the time. The arms were not used for a long time, in the same year both the city rights and the arms were already abolished. The arms were, however, still used unofficially.
In 1969 the arms were re-established, except that the eye was replaced by a sun and a triangle. These arms lasted a little longer, but were abolished in 1970. Finally the arms were again restored in 1990, but it still took six years before the arms were officially granted.
