The area belonged until the 14<sup>th</sup> century to the Counts of Waldeck. In the early 14<sup>th</sup> century the bishops of Köln gradually took over the area, and made it part of the Duchy of Engern. This Duchy used the arms of the Counts of [[Tecklenburg]], as it originally was a possession of Tecklenburg.
