The arms are a combination of the lion of Sayn and the wolf-irons of the Lords of Flammersfeld and were officially granted in 1948. The Lords of Flammersfeld combined the irons with three stars. The family became extinct somewhere in the 15<sup>th</sup> century. The Counts of Sayn became owners of the town, to which they gave some privileges, around 1500.
