The arms show in the chief the cross of the [[Köln (State)|State of Köln]], to which the area historically belonged until 1802. The lower right quarter shows a barrel-iron, derived from the arms of the Lords of Loe, who owned a castle near the town from the 14th-until 17th century.


The lower left half shows two miner's tool, symbols for the importance of mining in the development of the city.
