The oldest known seal of the city dates from 1419 and shows a small ship, which is a canting element (the name is derived from Schiffenstedt, or ship's place), between two small fish. In the 15<sup>th</sup> century the local seals show the above arms, showing the ship, but with the addition of the lion of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, who ruled the area at the time. The two small fish were removed.
