 The arms show the nettle-leaf, the typical symbol of the Counts of Schaumburg(-Holstein). These ruled the city of Recklinghausen from 1476-1576. The cross is taken from the arms of the [[Köln (State)|State of Köln]]. The largest part of the district historically belonged to Köln.
