In 1451 the local council asked for the right to use its own seal, which was granted by the Duke of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen. The seal showed a salt cooking pan with two salt-spoons and vapours. Even though the composition has been unaltered ever since, the size, shape and colours have differed widely.
