Schopfheim was founded as a city around 1250, but the city did not use any seals until the early 16<sup>th</sup> century. The oldest seals already showed the same composition as the present arms, the bend of Baden and in the left half the Archangel Michael, patron saint of the city. Only in some 19<sup>th</sup> century seals the saint is not used, on others the saint stands on a small hill.
