+From its foundation in 1846, Bishop Hatfield's Hall (renamed Hatfield College in 1919) used the undifferenced arms of Bishop Thomas Hatfield - Azure, a chevron Or between three lions rampant argent.  The college only added the motto "Vel Primus Vel Cum Primis".
+In 1954, the college was informed that it had been using Bishop Hatfield's arms illegally, and it sought a grant of its own from the College of Arms.  An ermine bordure was added to difference the college's arms from the bishop's, and the previously-established motto and a new crest were added.
