The village developed in the late Middle Ages around the castle with the same name. Already in the 15<sup>th</sup> century it was designated as a town (Markt). All seals and images of the city symbols show the canting falcon on a mountain (Berg=mountain, Stein=stone), the oldest known seal dating from 1514. The colours are known since 1562 and are the colours of Bayern.
