The arms were granted in 1906 and confirmed in 1935. The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which is known since 1269. The arms show a city view and show in the front the figure of St. Peter, the patron saint of the city, with the brothers Otto and Walram of Nassau. The city was a possession of the Counts of Nassau, who had also granted the city rights in 1251. Later seals show either the lion of Nassau alone, or combined with St. Peter.
