Hohenburg received city rights in 1542 and the arms were granted in the same year. The original arms showed a shield divided in three parts, with three unclear plants, most often shown as trees. Already in 1548 the arms were changed, the chief with the arms of the State of Regensburg were added and division was changed from three to two parts. The original division most likely was derived from the arms of the Markgraves of Hohenburg, who founded the town in the early 13<sup>th</sup> century. Later the town was a possession of the Bishops of Regensburg. In 1611 the small mountain in the base appeared for the first time.
