The village was founded around 1279 and was a possession of the Abbey in Rott until 1697, when it was bought by King Max Emmanuel of Bavaria. Since 1522 it was a free city.

The arms were adopted on February 13, 1957 and show a church, taken from the arms of the Rott Abbey. The miner's tools symbolise the mining in the are, which started the 15<sup>th</sup> century, and which has been of great importance for the city. The three mountains in the base symbolise the geographical situation; the village is built on the high grounds between the Regen and Lambach rivers.
