====Origin/meaning====
===Origin/meaning===
The town became a city in 1358 and was ruled until 1392 by the Lords of Randerath. The oldest, late 13th century, seal shows the arms of the Lords of Randerath, a chequered shield of 25 fields. The second seal, which dates from the early 15th century, shows the present arms, only with a crowned lion. The lion is the lion of [[Jülich]], as in 1392 the town became a possession of the Dukes of Jülich. The present arms, with the uncrowned lion, are in use since the 18th century.
