Neustadt was part of the County of Henneberg until 1353, when is became a possession of the Counts of Meissen (later Sachsen-Meissen). The oldest known seal dates from around 1360 and shows the lion of Meissen. These arms remained unchanged until the second half of the 17<sup>th</sup> century and were restored in 1890.
