Neubrunn was founded by the Counts of Wertheim, but became a possession of the Teutonic Order in the 13<sup>th</sup> century. In 1323 Neubrunn received city rights from King Ludwig of Bayern and was heavily fortified. From 1655 until 1802 the city was a possession of the Bishops of Würzburg.
