Vellberg received city rights in 1500, but the city never used any seals. The oldest use of arms dates from the 19<sup>th</sup> century and the arms showed a house on a hill (see image belos).

The present arms were granted on Oictober 28, 1936 and are a combination of the wing taken from the arms of the Counts of Flügelau (Flügel=wing) and a free quarter derived from the arms of the Lords of Vellberg. Vellberg was a possession of the Counts of Flügelau until 1318. The Lords of Vellberg actually ruled the town as vassals of the counts.
