The arms are a combination of the arms of the Hohenzollern family and a canting symbol (Truhe was supposed to mean chest). The town became a possession of the Margraves of Nürnberg, who originated from the Hohenzollern family in 1371. The quartered shield is known since 1387, but was replaced by a single chest from the 16th to the 19<sup>th</sup> century. The chest has been depicted in many forms, sometimes more like a bench, see image below. In 1938 the present arms were granted, which were based on the old seal.
