The arms show in the upper half the symbols for a Roman Catholic Basilica. The third quarter shows the image of the statue 'Onze Lieve Vrouw van Eiteren' in the basilica. The fourth quarter shows the arms of the municipality [[IJsselstein]], a common pattern in all Dutch arms for basilica.
The motto means : Domina Nostra In Eiteren Ora Pro Nobis, (Dutch: Onze Lieve Vrouw van Eiteren bid voor ons; English: Our Lady of Eiteren, pray for us)
In 2000 the following arms were proposed by Daae:

This proposal also show the same pattern, but now in the third quarter three balls as a symbol for St. Nicholas (after whom the Basilica is named) and a blue wavy bar for both St. Nicholas as patron saint for sailors, as well as the Hollandse IJssel river. This proposal was not adopted by the basilica.
