The arms were officially granted on February 16, 1847 and again on July 7, 1964. | |||
The oldest seals of the village date from 1286, 1332 and 1407 and show the local patron saint, St. Martin, with a fish and a star. In 1502 the seal of the city showed a lion with an anchor and star. The whole placed in a quadrilobe with an angel, two fish and the flint of Burgundy. The colours are known from a 16th century book. The arms were thus based on the seal, and in 1847 granted without the quadrilobe (see image below), which was corrected in 1964. | |||
