Valkininkai received city rights from Stanislaus Augustus on June 26, 1792. At the same day he granted the new city the use of a golden lion on a red (round) shield. The lion supposedly symbolised strength, pride and nobleness.

The sinister faced position of the lion is most likely the consequence of a clerk's heraldic illiteracy: that was very usual for the state chancellery of 1790s. Anyway, the arms became historic, and it was thus decided in modern times not to "correct" it.
