The wheatears symbolise the agricultural character of the municipality. The chief shows a fish for the formerly important fishing on the Ratzeburger See. The lower part of the chief is derived from the arms of [[Sachsen]] and symbolises the fact that the Herzogtum Lauenburg, to which the municipality belongs, historically was ruled by the Dukes of Sachsen.
