The wheatears symbolise the agricultural character of the municipality. The chief shows a fish for the formerly important fishing on the Ratzeburger See. The lower part of the chief is derived from the arms of [[Sachsen]] and symbolises the fact that the Herzogtum Lauenburg, to which the municipality belongs, historically was ruled by the Dukes of Sachsen. The colours, black, green and gold are also the colours of Sachsen.
