===Origin/meaning===
Contrary to the US tradition, the bishop did not impale his arms with those of the diocese.
The coat of arms heraldically portrays the baptismal patrons of Bishop Durick, Saint Joseph. the Carpenter and Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. The cross which quarters the shield is derived from the coat of arms of Gonzaga, while the lily is the symbol of Saint Joseph.

The wheat and grapas are the elements of the Holy Eucharist, and express the devotion of Bishop Durick to the Holy Eucharist and signify 1he principal function of the priesthood which is to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The greatest expression of the love of God for man occurs at the Transubstantiation of the Mass when Jesus Christ becomes tlruly present on the altar under the appearances of Bread and Wine.
