As common episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal half of the arms shows in chief the arms of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin to which the bishop belongs.

The lower half shows a cross for Christianity and two chequy fields taken from the arms of the [[Pittsburgh|city]] and [[Diocese of Pittsburgh]], where the bishop was born. The fleur-de-lys is a symbol of St. Mary and the sword represents St. Michael, patron saint of Papua New Guinea.
