===Origin/meaning===
The pelican in her piety is a traditional Eucharistic symbol because Archbishop Pell studied for the priesthood at Corpus Christi College. It likewise indicates the ministry of the Bishop to sanctify his people.

===Official blazon===
The four stars represent the Southern Cross. They were removed from his arms in Sydney, as the stars were already part of the Archdiocesal arms with which he impaled his personal arms in Sydney. The four eight pointed stars of the Cross were granted by the College of Heralds to the Catholic Church of Australia in 1834.

===Origin/meaning===
The gold disc with rays is a traditional symbol of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Archbishop Pell spent eleven years as Director of Aquinas Campus, Ballarat, in the Australian Catholic University. The Marian motif is chosen to show devotion to Mary Queen and Mother of the Church and to link the Archbishop's ministry with Pope John Paul II who has used this motif regularly.

The motto "Be Not Afraid" has been chosen by the Archbishop as the personal motif of his archiespicopate.
