As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop. | |||
The personal arms are based on the arms of two Irish families. An (unrelated) Scanlan family used as arms a pointed division line and three lions, which were adopted by the bishop to represent Scanlon. The lower lion was replaced by a chevron and a dove taken from an (unrelated) Coleman family and represents his mother (who was also named Coleman). | |||
