Origin/meaning
The field is blue to honor Saint Mary. The silver star is taken from the arms of the Diocese of Scranton and its superior, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, to show the ecclesiastic roots of the local church which Bishop Dougherty is called to serve as a bishop. The star is also seen in the arms of other bishops of Scranton Joseph Carroll McCormick, Cardinal John Joseph O'Connor, and James Clifford Timlin. Here it signifies the personal episcopal roots of Bishop Dougherty who served a ll of these bishops in curia capacities such as Chancellor and Vicar General of the Diocese of Scranton.

Below the star is a gold M taken from the arms of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, who named Bishop Dougherty to serve the Church in the order of bishops.

Official blazon
For his motto, His Excellency, Bishop Dougherty, has adoped the phrase SEDES SAPIENTIAE. By the use of this phrase, which translates into English as "Seat of Wisdom", he acknowledges that Jesus, and His Church, are the means by which sinful human beings may find our hope of eternal salvation.
