The Ermine spots alludes to the Arms of Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York 1939-1967, who consecrated Donnellan both Priest and Bishop. The Spearpoint alludes to St Thomas and the Frist Name of the Archbishop. The Saltire alludes to St Andrew and the Archbishop's Middle Name Andrew.
