The arms were granted on August 22, 1961.

The arms show the lion of [[Nassau]], the rose of the city of [[Ottweiler]] and the wheel of [[Neunkirchen]]. The largest part of the district was owned by a branch of the counts of Nassau (Nassau-Saarbrücken, later Nassau-Ottweiler) from 1381-1792. Thus the lion of Nassau was used in the arms. The two other symbols are taken from the arms of the two major cities in the district.
