He holds in his hands two small shields, one with the striped lion of Thüringen, the other with the black lion of [[Meissen]]. In the 16<sup>th</sup> century the small shields are replaced by the sword and scales, as in the arms above. At the same time the small shield with the fleur-de-lis appears, the origing thereof is not known. Smaller seals of the city during later centuries showed the small dhield alon, sometimes with an angel as supporter.
