The chief shows the cross of the [[Köln (State)|State of Köln]], the archbishops of Köln had one of their main residences in Bonn. The black lion is the lion of [[Jülich]], the red one the lion of Berg. The Western part of the district belonged to the Duchy of Jülich, the Eastern part to the Duchy of Berg.
