The village is named after the Münch family from Basel, who built the local castle in the 14<sup>th</sup> century and named themselves afterwards Münch von Münchenstein. In 1515 they sold the territory to the city of Basel.
 
The arms show a canting monk (Mönch/Münch), taken from the medieval arms of the family.
