The oldest known image of the arms dates from 1568 in the roll of arms made by Apian. The arms were identical to the present arms, except that the dog was facing right instead of left. Since the 19<sup>th</sup> century the dog is facing left. The dog, a Rüde in German, is a canting symbol.
