The arms show the benedictine abbey of Sant Cugat del Vallès (11<sup>th</sup> century), the most important monastery in the county of Barcelona, erected in memory of the African martyr Cugat (or Cucuphas, 4<sup>th</sup> century), beheaded in that place. The town developed aside the monastery, and had its own parish church, Sant Pere d'Octavià (represented here by the keys of St. Peter behind the monastery).
