The municipality did not have any historical arms or seals, so the arms granted were based on the arms of the Priory of Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe ten Hove. The priory was founded in the village in 1444. The seal from 1539 showed St. Mary and Jezus on a throne.

As in the early medieval time sthe village and area was a possession of the Counts of Vlaanderen and was goverend by a court, chaired by the Lord of the Oudburg ('old castle') in Gent. The small shield in front of St. Mary shows the arms of the Oudburg.
