Gespalten von Rot und Silber.

Origin/meaning

The city was a possession of the State of Augsburg from 1311-1803. The oldest seal dates from around 1500 and shows the arms of Augsburg, a shield divided from red and silver. The arms of the State were continued by the city and granted in 1834. In the late 19th century, however, the shield was changed into divided of silver and gold, the golden part with a tree green tree branch (probably beech, Buche=beech), see image below.

In 1950 the old arms were officially restored.
