The oldest known seal of the town is known from 1811, but probably dates from the late 18<sup>th</sup> century. It shows in a shield a ladder. The origin of the ladder is not known. In a later seal from around 1830 the ladder is accompanied by the letters D and Z, whose origin is also unknown. As the origin of the letters was not known, it was decided in 1901 to replace them by two roses taken from the arms of the Counts of Eberstein, who ruled the area for many centuries.
