The arms have been used by the city since 1558, without the leaves over the small shield, which were added only in the 1990s. The two towers symbolise the city itself, which was a possession of the Counts of [[Henneberg]]. The small shield shows the arms of the counts in the 16<sup>th</sup> century, with in the first and fourth quarter the imperial eagle above chequered field. The chequered field is derived from the arms of the city of Würzburg, together with the eagle it symbolises that the counts were Imperial governors in both Ilmenau and Würzburg.
