In 1174 Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa built a castle around which the town developed. From the castle is now only a ruin left. Hence the Imperial eagle as the main charge of the arms. The eagle can alos be seen on the seal of the town from the 13<sup>th</sup> century. The small shield is the arms of the [[Köln (State)|State of Köln]], to which the town belonged from 1424-1762.
