Süderneuland I is built on land reclaimed in 1556. Under the reign of Friedrich the Great a sea-lock was built and agriculture was started. This is symbolised by the lock and the monogramme FR (Fredericus Rex). The spurs are taken from the arms of [[Norden]] to symbolise the ties to this city.
