===Origin/meaning===
The image of the arm-less person first appears on a seal dating from 1496. The figure and the colours are most likely derived from the arms of the Lords (later Counts) of Lupfen, who founded the city in 1262 and who ruled the city until the 16th century. The figure itself is derived from a local legend related to the Lords of Lupfen.
