In the arms as Auxiliary of Utrecht, the personal arms are placed on the arms of the Archdiocese of Utrecht. The three columns refer to the arms of [[Vianen]], where the bishop was born. The colours were changed mainly for contrast, but green was chosen as a colour of trust, servitude and modesty. In Biblical terms, columns are also a symbol for the Apostles.

In his next post the personal arms are impaled with the arms of the Diocese of Groningen. As these were already green and gold, the colours of the personal arms were changed to the original colours of Vianen. To distinguish the arms from the arms of the town, a wavy bar, for the Lek river, was added.
In his current post, the Bishop uses the personal arms as an inescutcheon on the arms of the diocese.
