===Origin/meaning===
The city was founded as Swinemünde by King Frederik the Great in the 18th century. The oldest seal dates from the same time and has no heraldic composition; it shows a man standing on a hill and overlooking the harbour with a ship sailing into the harbour. In 1765 the local council orders a new seal with the griffin of Pommerania holding an anchor, symbolising the importance of the harbour. All later seals until the early 20th century all show the same arms. The only difference is the use of a silver or golden anchor during the years.
