Salzuflen received city rights from the Counts of Sternberg already before 1322. Salt mining has been of great importance already in the 13<sup>th</sup> century, and the oldest seal already shows the same composition of the present arms, a salt well and the star of the Counts of Sternberg. The composition was placed in a shield in the 16<sup>th</sup> century. The colours have varied during the years, as can be seen in the image below.
